Pune, Maharashtra, India – December 2025 – Longspan Structures Pvt Ltd is proud to announce that its project for the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has been recognized at the prestigious 2026 PCI Design Awards, winning in the International Transportation Structure category.
The award-winning project involved the construction of a new bridge over the Nira Canal in western India, providing a critical passageway for the “varkaris” during the annual Pandharpur Wari pilgrimage. Originally designed with steel I-beams, the bridge was re-engineered using an Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) U-girder system, combining structural innovation with sustainable construction practices.
Project Highlights:
Total Project Cost: USD 2.055 million (USD 1.34 million for precast concrete)
Project Size: 35,137 ft²
UHPC Girders: Six girders, each 335 ft long and weighing approximately 456 tons, made up of 26 precast segments assembled with a trolley-rail system and permanently joined via post-tensioning
Installation: Completed with no road closures, ensuring uninterrupted public access
Environmental Impact: Achieved a 63% reduction in global warming potential over 100 years compared with the original steel design
The project was delivered in collaboration with Vijay Nirman Company Pvt Ltd as contractor. The recognition underscores Longspan Structures’ commitment to engineering excellence, innovative solutions, and sustainable infrastructure development.
